In Texas, front side windows must let in at least 25% of light. Rear side windows and the back window can be any darkness as long as the car has side mirrors on both sides. Windshields can only be tinted above the AS-1 line or the top 5 inches, and no window film can be more than 25% reflective.
Window tint is one of the best upgrades you can make for driving in Texas — it keeps your cabin cooler, protects your skin and interior from UV, and adds privacy. But going too dark on the wrong windows can get you pulled over. Here's what's legal.
What does "VLT" mean?
Tint darkness is measured in VLT — visible light transmission: the percentage of light that passes through the window. Lower numbers are darker. "5% limo tint" lets in only 5% of light; "35%" is a medium shade; "70%" is very light.
Texas tint limits by window
| Window | What's allowed |
|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line or the top 5 inches |
| Front side windows | Must let in at least 25% of light (25% VLT or lighter) |
| Rear side windows | Any darkness |
| Back window | Any darkness if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides |
| Reflectivity | No more than 25% reflective |
Texas allows a small measuring tolerance, but we don't recommend counting on it. When you tint with us, we'll help you pick a shade that looks great and stays legal.
Is there a medical exemption?
Yes. Drivers or regular passengers with a medical condition that requires extra protection from sunlight can request a medical exemption with a doctor's statement, allowing darker tint than normal. Keep the paperwork in your vehicle.
What tint film should I choose?
Darkness and heat rejection aren't the same thing. A light ceramic film can block more heat than a dark cheap film, because ceramic is designed to reject infrared heat — not just visible light. For Texas summers, ceramic is the best choice for most daily drivers. Learn more on our window tint page.
Common questions
Is 20% tint legal in Texas?
Not on the front side windows of a passenger car — they must let in at least 25% of light. 20% (or darker) is legal on the rear side windows and the back window if you have dual side mirrors.
Is limo tint (5%) legal in Texas?
Only on the rear side windows and back window. It is not legal on the front side windows or windshield without a medical exemption.
Can I tint my whole windshield in Texas?
No. Tint is only allowed above the AS-1 line or in the top 5 inches of the windshield, unless you have a medical exemption.
