Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, clear, self-healing film that physically blocks rock chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard liquid layer that adds gloss, repels water and makes the car easier to clean, but it won't stop rock chips. Many drivers put PPF on the front of the car and ceramic coating on everything.
How they compare
| PPF | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Clear urethane film | Liquid coating that bonds to paint |
| Rock chip protection | Excellent | Minimal |
| Swirl & scratch resistance | Self-heals light scratches | Some resistance to light marring |
| Gloss & easy cleaning | Good | Excellent — strong water beading |
| Typical lifespan | Around 7–10 years | Around 2–5+ years |
| Cost | Higher — priced by coverage | Lower |
Choose PPF if…
- You drive a lot of highway miles (hello, 75, 121, the Tollway and 380).
- You have a new or high-value car and want to keep the paint chip-free.
- You want the best possible protection for resale value.
Choose ceramic coating if…
- You want deep gloss and a car that's much easier to wash.
- You want protection from UV, bird droppings and water spots at a lower cost.
- Your car is mostly a daily driver and rock chips aren't your main worry.
Why many people get both
PPF on the high-impact front end stops chips where they happen most. Ceramic coating on top of the film and the rest of the car adds gloss and makes everything easy to clean. It's the most complete protection package we offer.
Either way, the paint should be corrected first — both PPF and coatings lock in whatever is underneath. That's why we often pair them with paint correction.
Common questions
Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?
Yes. Coating over PPF makes the film easier to clean and adds gloss. It's a very popular combination.
Which is better for a new car?
If budget allows, front-end PPF plus a full ceramic coating is ideal for a new car. If you have to choose one, choose PPF for highway drivers and ceramic coating for mostly local driving.
